Contemporary Approaches | July 2024
Paris will host the 2024 Summer Olympics Games from July 26 to August 11. Over 10,500 athletes from 206 countries will come together to compete in 32 different sports.
This marks 100 years since Paris last hosted the Summer Games in 1924. Paris will join London as the only city to host the Olympics three times, having previously hosted in 1900 and 1924. According to the official Olympic website, “a total of 40 sports are in the Olympics, including 32 in the upcoming Paris 2024 Summer Olympics and eight in Milano Cortina 2026, the next Winter Olympics.”
"There will be a total of 206 countries participating, an estimated 10,500 athletes, 329 medal events (second most in the history of the Games, (339 at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics). Of the 329 events, 28 are in "core" sports, or sports that were part of both the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics," according to ESPN.
The 2024 Paris Olympics will be a unique and memorable experience, with an estimated 45,000 volunteers to help ensure the smooth running of the Games. For the first time, the Olympic Opening Ceremony will take place along the Seine River, with athletes arriving by boat, a picturesque and symbolic start to the Games. Several events will be held in iconic locations, like equestrian at the Palace of Versailles and beach volleyball near the Eiffel Tower, adding a touch of grandeur to the sporting events. Four sports will be added: skateboarding, surfing, breaking (aka break dancing), and sport climbing, bringing a fresh and exciting element to the Games.
