1.) CA: It’s a pleasure to have you with us. Let’s start from the beginning. Tell us a little more about your story; how did you know you wanted to be involved in music?

Ella: Oh well, first off, it’s a pleasure as well to have this interview. I would say it’s quite a long story how I got here. But the first time I knew I wanted to be involved in music was at the age of 12, when I got my first guitar. I was just very drawn to it, and the first time I played it, I remember I already had a very good grasp of melody and made a song just by ear. After that, music and music chances, music friends just kept coming back into my life. Of course, back then, I was so young I didn’t know much, and I kinda took it for granted, but I don’t regret it. I mean, I was in Peru, and everything with music was so different, a little looked down upon. So I had a lot of stress growing up, thinking it might not be a good career choice. But even though it took me a minute to figure it out. I think it was meant to be this way. In the end, it led to me to decide myself to become a musician and moved to Los Angeles to follow my passion so I’m glad it happened the way it did.

2.) CA: When did you figure out that you had a unique talent for music?

Ella: I think when you are born with music talent, you just kind of know when you’re young. You either start banging on things with a good sense of rhythm, or you are very excited around instruments, and when you play them, it’s not something stressful, you know. It’s liberating, and you get it fast. I feel like, in my case, I knew it the moment my mom bought my first guitar when I was 12. She was very supportive from the beginning. So, I grabbed the guitar, and It just happened like that (she snapped her fingers). I played it, and it was as if it was meant to be. I feel like as a young kid; you have no idea about that talent; you don’t know what it means. Having the support of parents is definitely something you need if someone wants to begin to learn at a very young age.

3.) CA: So you mention that your mom was supportive. Were both of your parents supporting your decision with music?

Ella: Hmmm not specifically. I feel like as a parent you have this fear of “what if my kid can’t make it” but I strongly believe that anything is possible and that parents shouldn’t project their fears onto their kids. I don’t blame my parents or have any resentment towards them at all. But it was definitely a hard road to convince my dad, mostly, to let me go and study music and pursue my music career. My mom was already so supportive of my career choice and as a mom she was there emotionally always. But in the end I had to talk to my dad and get the courage to say “hey.. trust me, it will happen, I am going to be just fine.” And well, here I am! It definitely paid off.

4.) CA: So, how did your music journey start?

Ella: It started back in Lima, I was 17 years old, and I was looking for a producer to teach me all of his knowledge in music theory and music production and engineering. At this point in my life, I knew for sure that I wanted to pursue music, but everyone was either super supportive or thought that I was crazy (laughs). So, I contacted a recording studio and met one of their sound engineers and producers. His name was Tito; he is the one that truly taught me everything I needed to know to start my music career. From music theory, production, engineering to the business side of it. He was a great mentor.

5.) CA: How did moving to Los Angeles changed your career?

Most of the artists that I am working on and all the opportunities that I’ve had couldn’t have been possible if I wasn’t here in LA. I studied composition at the Musicians Institute and met some wonderful people who opened and expanded my chances. Also, just in general being a hard-working person, very professional, and on top of your game is something that people here in LA, such a competitive place, value the most. Apart from being a really good person and someone they want to work with, of course. I think one of the things that I have learned here is that you always have to be pushing, always aiming higher, and be prepared for anything. Because your dreams can come true anytime, if you just keep going.
